Gardens of South Africa's Cape

Kirstenbosch is unique: it showcases the Cape Floral Kingdom in a setting of extraordinary natural drama, backed by Table Mountain. It does not feel imposed on the landscape, it feels grown from it, celebrating indigenous plants in naturalistic displays with unforgettable views.
About this tour
South Africa’s Garden Route has a way of resetting your senses. One minute you are breathing salt air off the coast, the next you are in mountain-backed valleys where the light feels sharper and the colours more intense. I love watching gardeners realise that this is not a garden route in the neat, clipped sense. It is a living mosaic of wild flora, dramatic habitats and wildlife, stitched together by extraordinary scenery.
What makes the tour so special is the variety. We move through distinct botanical worlds, from the fine-leaved fynbos and uniquely adapted coastal flora to the succulents of the Little Karoo, the lofty giants of the Tsitsikamma forest and the fleeting glory of the west coast wildflowers. Each has its own character and its own lessons for anyone who gardens at home.

What you'll learn
This is a masterclass in how landscapes work. You will look at how fynbos survives poor soils, dry summers and fire, how coastal and Karoo plants cope with salt, wind and drought, and how forest layers create depth and shade. There is plenty to bring home: gravel and drought-tolerant gardening, coastal planting, woodland texture, and the power of drifts and mass planting for impact. South Africa does not just show you plants, it shows you how plant communities belong together.
Gardens you'll visit
Beyond the gardens
This tour is as much about landscape and wildlife as horticulture. Between the botanical highlights there are the sweeping coast, the big Karoo skies, the Winelands, Table Mountain and the Cape, and the animals and birds these habitats support. It is a trip that feels wonderfully whole, where the plants and the places that shaped them are seen together.
By the end of the tour you return home with your senses sharpened: a clearer eye for plant communities, a deeper appreciation of resilient beauty, and a notebook full of ideas about drought-tolerant design, coastal planting, woodland texture and wildflowers at scale. It is the kind of inspiration that stays with you.
